Ohio Kei Truck Registration
Ohio defines qualifying mini-trucks and lets local authorities authorize them on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. This is a local-permission route, not unrestricted statewide approval.

Federal import eligibility and state road registration are separate decisions. Confirm the classification and requirements for your particular vehicle before buying. Source dates and limits are listed below.
How do titling and registration work?
First confirm that the vehicle meets Ohio's mini-truck definition, including the 660 cc-or-less engine and 900-to-2,200-pound dry-weight limits. Then confirm that the local authority controlling the intended roads has adopted an authorizing ordinance or resolution. Road use requires a compliant local law-enforcement inspection, Ohio title, and Ohio registration.
Which roads and speeds are permitted?
Operation is limited to locally authorized streets and highways with speed limits no greater than 35 mph. A mini-truck may cross a faster road at an intersection. Local authorities may impose stricter or additional requirements.
What about safety and emissions inspections?
Ohio requires an inspection by local law enforcement before road registration. Required equipment includes adequate brakes, working brake lights, headlights, tail lights and turn signals, steering, a windshield, a rearview mirror, and safe tires.
What should you confirm with an insurer?
Tell the insurer the exact chassis, Ohio mini-truck classification, local authorization, and intended use. Ask the BMV and insurer for written confirmation of the financial-responsibility and coverage documents required for your application and operation; an insurance quote does not establish road legality.
What should you bring to an eligibility check?
Use this as a preparation list. The agency must confirm the actual application documents, fees, and category for your vehicle.
- Ownership records, exact chassis identification, and federal import documents
- Evidence that the vehicle meets Ohio's statutory mini-truck definition
- Confirmation of an authorizing ordinance or resolution for the intended local roads
- A passed local law-enforcement inspection
- Ohio title and registration before public-road operation

Ohio's statute authorizes local governments to create a road-use route; it does not itself open every qualifying road. Verify the current local ordinance and application procedure before buying, importing, or operating a vehicle.
