Texas Registration Guide

Texas registers kei trucks as standard motor vehicles. The process requires a TxDMV inspection and title application.

Step 1 — Texas Safety Inspection

All vehicles in Texas require an annual safety inspection from a licensed inspection station. Kei trucks pass this inspection without issue in most cases. Cost: ~$25.

Step 2 — Title Application

Submit Form 130-U (Application for a Texas Title) at your county tax assessor-collector office with all import documents.

Step 3 — Emissions

Only required in certain counties (Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Bexar, Travis, El Paso, and others). Kei trucks typically pass with no issues.

Step 4 — Registration

Registration fees vary by county but are generally $50–$75 for light trucks.

Texas minimums: $30,000 bodily injury per person / $60,000 per accident / $25,000 property damage. Most standard carriers will insure kei trucks as pickup trucks or compact trucks.

Texas allows kei trucks on all public roads. The large rural population makes kei trucks particularly common in agricultural areas. TxDMV has historically been consistent in processing kei truck registrations.
