Understanding the 25% Chicken Tax

The Chicken Tax is a 25% tariff on light trucks (including kei trucks) imported into the United States. Enacted in 1964 as a retaliatory tariff on European chicken, it has remained in place for over 60 years and significantly impacts the total landed cost of any kei truck.

Customs duty is calculated on the entered value of the vehicle — the purchase price in Japan. Ocean shipping, broker fees, and inland transport are not subject to the duty. The HTS code for kei trucks is typically 8704.31.0000.
